Can coaching help me reach my health, fitness and weight loss goals ?

I get it. Paying for a number of 1:1 coaching sessions for something as normal as losing weight and / or becoming healthier and fitter may seem excessive. After all, there are literally millions of books, dvds, programmes and huge amounts of information online about the subject, all telling you the “best way” to lose weight, be healthier, be fitter, have more energy. You just need to find the one that works for you.

So how is that going ?

Have you found the one that works for you ? Have you found the one that is working for you years down the line ?

Or, are you still searching for “the one”. The one book, diet plan, exercise plan that works forever more ?

So many of us spend our lives searching for “the one”, we have short-term success, think we have found it and then revert to our old habits. Or worse still, we put on more weight than we initially lost.

The thing is, it is not a lack of dietary, health, fitness knowledge or an inability to gain that knowledge that is the problem here. The problem is a lack of ongoing motivation and, in a lot of cases, some long-term identity issues that are causing you to self-sabotage your efforts. Add to this a lack of understanding about how YOU work – your preferences, strengths, dislikes and you are on an uphill struggle on a very slippery slope !

And this is where coaching comes in and, in my case, life coaching and mBIT coaching.

Life coaching enables you to transform that slippery slope into manageable steps that will get you to the top. It empowers you to come up with your own answers and then holds you accountable for taking the actions you have identified. As you start taking action, it facilitates a new belief in yourself that you can do it, enabling you to start changing that identity that you have of yourself. You are no longer someone who is always on a diet, needs to lose weight, is unfit and unhealthy – you are someone who is working on becoming stronger, fitter, healthier, lighter and more confident in yourself. Life coaching provides you with extra motivation as you are not only doing it for yourself, but also for your coach. It enables you to come up with the next few, small steps that you need to take and provides the support and encouragement you need to take them.

mBIT coaching (mBraining) enables you to gain a much clearer understanding of what makes you tick, of where your blocks lie and why you are finding yourself self-sabotaging as soon as you start to get anywhere. This type of coaching empowers you with a deeper knowledge of who you are, what you want and what will work for you. This enables to you move past what has always stopped you in the past and finally make those changes for life.

This is why I find coaching to be the most effective way to find that healthy, energetic, light and confident you ! You work together (with your coach) to identify the next steps that you need to take, you make a commitment to taking these steps and you actually do them – because there is not only a commitment to yourself, but also to your coach. It is so easy to let yourself down but not so easy to let someone else down !

The reason so many people fail to maintain a healthy lifestyle, fail to keep the weight off, is because they work only on the external issues – food, drink, exercise. They overlook the internal issues, they ignore their individual preferences, they do not work on their identity and beliefs. No matter how much dieting you do – if you do not like the food you are eating, you will not keep it up, if you carry on telling yourself “I need to lose weight” – you will always hold more weight than you need, if you have a belief from childhood that sugar equals reward and love you will find it extremely difficult to deprive yourself of those sugary treats.

You must work on the inside at the same time as taking that practical action and you must approach your new diet / exercise regime as a new way of life, a long-term improvement. You are not on a diet or on an exercise regime, you are simply now a fitter, healthier person. You are not depriving yourself of food you love, you are simply choosing food that loves you more often. You are not exercising to punish yourself for that doughnut, you are exercising because you respect your body and what to keep it in good shape.

You are simply choosing to feel great from the inside out, forever more.

So, whilst coaching may initially seem excessive, is it really ?

If you use the services of a great coach, that you connect with and can open up to, this will provide a long-term result – no more wasting time and money on fad diets and extreme exercise regimes, no more feeling like a failure as you find yourself going backwards again. Your clothes will last a lot longer as you no longer change weight and shape. No more memberships or subscriptions that you do not use.

Through the process of coaching you become aware of several different tools and strategies that you can use, way past your last coaching session. You will establish habits that no longer need as much effort to stick to, so stay with you forever more. You will adopt a positive, can do mindset that affects all areas of your life.

A 3 / 6 month block of coaching sessions varies greatly in price and coaches vary greatly in specialisms, experience, knowledge and approach. However if you take a little bit of time to find the right coach for you, spend a bit of money on the coaching sessions, put time and effort into sticking to the actions and tasks agreed, it will be a short term programme that gets long-term results.

So maybe not so excessive when you actually consider it ?!
